Blackjack LLC, owner of Blackjack Ski Resort, has executed an agreement to acquire next door neighbor Indianhead Mountain Resort, and the deal is expected to be consummated by the end of the month. “It’s 99.9 percent sure that the deal will go through. During the summer, Indianhead Mountain Resort, near Wakefield, and Blackjack Ski Area, near Bessemer, were brought under one new owner, Art Dumke. At the start of this year’s winter season, Big Snow Resorts started offering combined passes that allow outdoor enthusiasts to ski or snowboard both hills with the same season pass. Indianhead Mountain Resort Ski resort and conference center in the Upper Peninsula, Wakefield, Michigan. All Big Snow Resort lift tickets are valid at both Indianhead and Blackjack Mountains.

Resorts in this article: Big Powderhorn Mountain, Big Snow Resort - Blackjack, Big Snow Resort - Indianhead Mountain
Indianhead Mountain, which was in the process of acquiring nearby Big Powderhorn and neighboring Blackjack, has announced that all closing activities and discussions have been terminated. The deal was set to close prior to the new year.
A couple of people associated with the Big Powderhorn Lodging Association and an association home owner have filed a suit in the local County Circuit Court alleging that Powderhorn initially agreed to sell the ski facility to the association. The lawsuit asks that the ski area be required to follow through with that earlier agreement, and a lien has been filed to encumber the property until the lawsuit is resolved.
A disappointed Barry Bolich, Indianhead general manager, said, 'Our vision of a combined resort with better economics and more attractive features and amenities has been blocked by this lawsuit. We feel that the ultimate success of our business and the Western Upper Peninsula ski resort industry as a whole have been potentially impaired by this lawsuit.'
The sale, as reported earlier at OnTheSnow, if it had gone through, would have created a mega western UP ski resort with close to 100 runs and multiple facilities. The resorts are within minutes of each other and one can see Blackjack's slopes from Indianhead. The Hill Hopper Pass, which allows you ski all three ski areas with one lift ticket, will still be available for at least this season, according to Indianhead Marketing Vice President Dave Nyquist.
Speculation this summer was that Blackjack would not reopen this season as an individual ski resort. If the merger had gone through Indianhead was going to operated the facility Friday through Sunday. Now, it most likely will not be open for the 2008/09 season, which is my own speculation. The skiing and riding is good at both Indianhead and Powderhorn with some of the Heartland's longest runs and biggest verticals. The three resorts really do belong together. It makes sense on so many levels.

Bessemer is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 1,914. It is the county seat of Gogebic County.
The city is situated within Bessemer Township, but is politically independent. It is on US 2 with Ironwood several miles to the west and Wakefield several miles to the east. The Big Powderhorn, Blackjack and Indianhead ski areas are located within a few miles of Bessemer. Cross-country skiing and snowmobiling are also very popular in this area known as Big Snow country because of heavy snowfall influenced by nearby Lake Superior.
Bessemer was incorperated in 1884 as the mining of ore and copper started growing througout the Gogebic Range. The town was erected county seat in 1887 and the courthouse was built. The town then grew to a boomtown of stores, motels, gas stations, and resturaunts. The town slowly started falling apart after the closing of the mines. The town is nowpeaceful with a few gas stations and some other businesses.
